15 February 2011 (All day)

For the past two weeks, I've been consulting with Land Information New Zealand on building the case for geospatial information and establishing a spatial data infrastructure. During this time, I've delivered different presentations that I thought would be useful to post online. They give insight into the value of geospatial and also cover generally useful topics like how to build a good business case.

"The Cheese Has Moved" in Geospatial Applications (PDF 103KB)

This presentation uses the management story about adapting to change called "Who Moved My Cheese?" to discuss how the landscape of geospatial applications has changed and why, and who will be best able to adapt to the changes and succeed.

Practical Considerations for Business Case Development (PDF 232KB)

This presentation covers the steps for developing a good business case (aligning to strategic objectives, business analysis, cost benefit analysis, options and risks, non-market impacts), elevator pitches, and a summary of my top 10 tips.

Foresight: The Inside Track (PDF 738KB)

This presentation talks about the pervasiveness of geospatial information, the platforms, particular smart phones and delivery mechanisms supporting geospatial innovation going forward, innovations that are already cropping up, and some challenges that the future holds.

Never Waste a Good Crisis (PDF 109KB)

The title is a quote from Hillary Clinton and the slides discuss government objectives (eg operational efficiency and making government transparent and accountable), data privacy, the value of geospatial to the nation, and key barriers.

Case studies in location economies (PDF 337KB)

Lastly, this presentation outlines some UK case studies in cost and non-cost related benefits of the effective use of geospatial information at a local government level.

The slides in the last presentation cite research from a report on the value of geospatial information in local public service delivery and as a public good, commissioned by the UK Local Government Association. The report is available from the LG website.
